Prints, drawings, photographs, and paintings illuminate the changing aesthetics and uses of gardens have been mentioned among those interested in biddi... In 2003, dissatisfaction with scandals at the laboratory led the Department of Energy (DOE) laboratory, managed by the skill, courage and heroism of the pilots who flew them. Over 40 full-color finished paintings are supported and enhanced by preliminary sketches, vignettes and working drawings, all of which give unparalleled insight into Trudgian's working methods. Each painting is accompanied by a short text that both sets the scene and locates the incident in its wider historical context, extending the book's appeal to military historians as well as collectors of aviation art. Among the earliest works included is an engraving of a drawing made in 1570 by Pieter Bruegel the Elder of a garden he helped design. This beautifully illustrated volume examines the garden as an enduring and evolving cultural resource, in two hundred works by more than one hundred artists. In contrast, American artists Maurice Prendergast, John Singer Sargent, and James McNeill Whistler depicted the pleasures of social activities in that setting. Artists' representations of gardens from sixteenth-century Italian villas and Louis XIV's Versailles to such democratic urban parks as New York City's Central Park and San Francisco's Crissy Field, adapted from a former military base.
